Promises: Making & Breaking them
How often to you make a commitment to yourself one day only to find yourself half way through a container of Ben & Jerry's, a bottle of wine, your pay check, etc? Why are some promises easier to keep and others bring up every ounce of resistance our psyche can find or create?
From my experience, it's the things that will have the most profound difference on my life that are the hardest and yet the easiest on some level if I'm truly ready and it's actually the right time in my life to uproot the weed. I think it's easier to start with small commitments that have less of an extreme effect because that way if we aren't perfect ( and who is especially at the beginning ), the result isn't traumatic. What I mean is that it isn't going to make a huge difference if you break your personal promise a few times. Granted everything we do has an effect and even small things can add up over time if gone uncheck. I find that when we are ready for a change then the Universe/God will align everything that needs to happen to support that shift in whatever unique way it needs to play out.
The kicker is that how things line up are rarely how we expect them ( see the posting on DEAD for more on demands, expectations, assumptions, & desire ). Getting to a place where we can stay open to how things unfold even when it doesn't quite match the assumed "ideal" allows for the greatest healing. In this place of healing, we find it easier to make personal & professional commitments of all types & sizes and stay with them. This staying is not always easy, pleasant, and certainly not familiar but isn't that the point? We are seeking to clear out the past and do it differently - blazing a new trail in the land in hard enough but particularly interesting when it comes to mind, body, emotions & spirit.
So what makes it easier to stay committed to your Self? Well, I think that we all past through points in our life when we've had enough of one issue or another. That tipping point is where motivation & determination come from and with that anything is possible. This is where the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain ( or fear ) of changing, trying something new. This is why most people can't get clean and sober until they "hit a bottom." The thing about "bottoms" though is that they don't have to be nightmares come true - they can be seemingly small as long as they are profound. Profound meaning those things that touch our hearts & Souls in an unforgettable way like a connecting to a new lover, bonding with a grandparent, adopting an animal, or the birth of a child, to name a few.
You know when and how you've been touched over the years. Go back to that place and ask your heart where it needs to go next. What places need light, love, & healing? In that deeply quiet place, your next personal commitment will arise to carry you across the stormy seas to the other side where everything you now see and experience is brighter, clearer, & surrounded by peace and happiness. In this space, promises don't feel like burdens but like welcomed witnesses and support figures that serve to bring you closer to the god within you and around you.
What things have exceeded their shelf life, earned a right to die and be disposed of? From that new space, what is your heart asking to be filled and healed with? Answers will come. Sit patiently knowing that everything happens in its perfect time and place. No Mistakes. Not Ever.
