Waiting vs. Leaping
How many times have you heard someone or yourself saying, "well, I'm waiting for ...." or "I'm waiting until ..." So is this waiting a type of spiritual patience or fear based delay that robs us of the richness and responsibility of living our lives fully - without apology or regret? Now, I'm not saying that anything goes or that sometimes, good things take time because they do. Plants/fruits/vegetables are one of those things that if taken too soon from Source/God then they are less rich, ripe, tasty, or nutritious. But on the other hand if you wait too long the fruit, the flower begins to wilt or rot and is no longer useful or enjoyable. As a friend used to say when it was time to go home, "It's past my shelf life!"
So what has or is approaching its expiration date in your life? How long will you wait on your lover to take the next step in commitment? How long will you put up with your bosses criticisms & belittling before you take a stand? How long will you wait to live the life you've always dreamed up? Because if you keep waiting, then one day when all those things you've been waiting for come to pass or don't, you'll just find another thing to stop yourself. Such as, "Well, I'm too old now," or "I'm too tired or weak or broke..." - the excuses are endless! Why do we continue to WAIT for life to happen? There is a fine line between waiting motionlessly & helplessly on God to send us the divinely inspired email instruction letter & discovering the subtle clues along the way that guide our small daily steps towards the bigger dream that we desire.
I often wonder if it's some sort of Southern "sacrificial lamb"idea that believes it's honorable and good to suffer. But why would God want us to suffer any more than we already do in this crazy world? This world of imperfect actions & ideals creates enough pain and suffering so why should we believe that a kind, loving Creator would do the same thing? I used to believe in the Old Testament God of fire and brimstone, judgment & condemnation, but not anymore. Those beliefs and that God almost caused the end of me and many like me, and I came to realize that a real God wouldn't want that for his creations. What artist likes to see the destruction of their art, whatever the form?! But in order to overcome this spiritual make-believe or brainwashing we must look deeper, beyond the world of money, property, and prestige and look into our hearts and the hearts of our community of loved ones.
Without a community, a sangha, a church/synagogue family, then how can we rehabilitate our hearts and minds? All religions and spiritual traditions preach fellowship and Christian scripture describes this coming together in Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them." When we come together in a greater sense, we can see, feel, & experience more than our finite human nature can experience. No wonder that relationship, intimate or platonic, is so powerful and primary in our evolution and expansion. Nothing like a intimate relationship to throw you into the fire of transformation! Life can seem to moving along quietly & easily but when you welcome another Soul into your life path, then you create a space where God/Healing/Wholeness can happen much more quickly than it can alone. This is not a path for the faint of heart. It requires commitment, dedication, determination, willingness, compromise, ego deflation, discipline, and deep relentless love of the Path and the Process of Unfoldment. I think this is what Jesus meant when he said, "the Kingdom of God is within/among you," in Luke 17:21. We awaken to that Kingdom, to that expansive place of love & connection when we come together as mentioned above.
So stop waiting & take the leap into the transformative fire of love! Let it burn away the fears, follies, resentments, and resignation that has plagued you from becoming the fantastic Phoenix that you are. For those that don't know, a phoenix is mythological bird (probably made famous in the Harry Potter series) who rises from the ashes after periodically bursting into flames. It goes through life cycle after life cycle in this manner as if burning through layer after layer of baggage. Also, its tears have healing properties and it is a very loyal creature. Pretty amazing symbol for life and love. It's full of fire and passion but only so much as there is loyalty & honesty which often is emotional & tear-soaked. With that brilliant combination, there is no need to wait for life to happen or worry about how it'll come out. All we have to do is keep walking, keep breathing, and keep observing for just like sharks & rays, if they are moving through the water constantly then they cannot filter out the oxygen to breathe and will end up suffocating. Don't allow your life to suffocate you any longer. Reach out, let someone in, look for the miracles, and make some new memories.
May your journey be blessed and beautiful just like you.
Om Shanti. Om Peace.
