Certainty

Certainty
Root my being in certainty
So I witness you without fear.
Even as the waves of blood crash over me
And the worlds char in fire.

- Jalal-ud-Din Rumi

So what certainty is Rumi asking to be rooted in, so that "I witness you without fear"?

Certainty: a mental state of being without doubt; perfect knowledge that is free from error.  So it's not a certainty "about" anything, just a state of 'being' that is free from doubt.  What a concept to consider!  To live free from doubt & in perfect knowing & belief that all is perfect and right and in harmony with one's Path, one's Dharma.  Complete trust in the process equaling total freedom to be present and joyful, knowing worry was futile & just more fear (false evidence appearing real).

To witness you, me, the world, WITHOUT fear, feels like a goal everyone could have.  To be in such a state of harmony and grounded faith that nothing could shake your presence from this moment.  "Even as the waves of blood crash over me And the worlds char in fire," Rumi could witness the world, life, the Love of God in all things, without fear.  "A faith that could move mountains," according to Biblical texts, the mountains that our minds create in order to keep up from being here, now; that keep us from en-Joying the amazing opportunities available each day if we could simple pause, breathe, & see what was in front of us and around us and ultimately IN us.

How many times do we let fear sweep in and grip us, paralyze us, and delude us?  Yet how powerful it is when we can hold our ground, our presence and simply witness not only ourselves but also the ones we love and the world around us.  The process and presence of witnessing another is one of the most powerful experiences and expressions of love for the giver and the receiver because it is simply a process of seeing and being seen - acknowledging and being acknowledged for who and what we are in that moment...and without any judgment or labeling.  Just holding the space for that person in from of you to unfold and expand into their greatness, which in turn gives you a chance to see the greatness that you hold within yourself.

What provides you certainty, freedom from doubt, today?

Know it may be different tomorrow or next week but the important part is the emphasis on right now, this moment, the only moment that exists.  Often times it takes quiet and lengthy reflection and evaluation in order to discover that mental state.  One’s personal belief system about how the world works can provide a foundation from which we can start each day with confidence and certainty in all that will play out in front of us and within us.  Remember though, freedom from doubt doesn’t always mean everything is going to turn out like we want or be pain-free.  Expectations of idealism can lead to illusion, delusion, and disappointment, which then begins to shake what we thought was our firm foundation.  Keep it real & stay connected.
